How to Lead a Meaningful Life?

Millennials today often find themselves stressed and clueless about what to do in life. We feel stressed if we see our peers doing well in life and achieving a lot in less time. I want to tell you all that life is more than just a competition. It’s about living every moment as if it’s your last! It’s about cherishing the little things in life like enjoying a sunset with your loved ones, reading a good book, having a meaningful conversation with someone, playing some music together, and so on.

We must trust the timings of the Universe. The right thing happens at the right time and what matters most is how we spend our present moment. We feel stressed and sad because we’re either living in the past or the future but never in the present.

Our mind is always active, and our body is relaxed. It should be the other way round. We should be physically active and mentally calm.

For a moment, take a deep breath and see the beauty around you! Focus on the “Now.” You’ll find a million things to be grateful for! The past is gone, and there’s no point ruminating about it. The future is not in our hands. But what we have is the 'present.' And what we do today will decide our future.

Our life is a cocktail of positive and negative circumstances. Our experiences give meaning to life, and it shapes who we are. We love to think about positive life experiences and cherish the memories forever.

Some common positive experiences that you may face in life are:

    1. Birth of A Sibling

    2. Discovering your Passion

    3. Falling in love

    4. Starting your own business

    5. Spending quality time with family

    6. Getting your dream job

    7. Your grandma reading you a story on the balcony on a beautiful day

    8. Reading a Life-Changing Book

    9. Traveling the World

    10. Composing a song with your best friend

    11. Having a long conversation with an old friend after ages

    12. Starting your own business

    13. Overcoming a Fear

    14. Baking cookies with your mother

    15. Going on a nature trek with friends

    16. Completing a wonderful meditation course

Life had the right balance of good and bad times. Nothing is permanent. The sun shines brightly after a dark night and vice versa. That’s the universal law of nature.

As much as we cherish and love to think about all the positive life experiences, it is equally important to understand the importance of difficult times in life. It is a failure and setback that help us grow in life. They help us discover our strengths, patience, tolerance, and agility.

    Some negative life experiences are:

    1. Losing your job and facing financial difficulties

    2. Losing your spouse/loved one

    3. An unprecedented death in the family

    4. Fighting through a difficult disease

    5. Meeting with an uncalled accident

    6. Suffering from depression

    7. Failing an important test

    8. Facing a never-ending pandemic

    9. Seeing your loved one suffering from a life-threatening disease

I believe that the little things in life bring us the most joy! For example, nothing feels as good as sipping a hot cup of coffee on a rainy day or strumming the guitar by the bonfire with your favorite people on a winter evening!

In our quest for achieving things in life, we forget to feel grateful for these little joys in life, which give meaning to our lives. If we are more aware and learn how to enjoy every second of these special moments, we will find meaning in life.

How to Find your Own Purpose in Life?

Life purpose may depend from people to people. For example, for some, it be might be taking good care of their parents; for others, it might be contributing towards society or something as simple as being happy in life.

To find your purpose in life, you may practice the following three things:

    1. Explore:

To discover your passion, you will have to start exploring. Start learning new skills and see what you enjoy and what you don’t. The major problem lies in the fact that people do not try new things.

If you do not enjoy your work at present, it is a signal that you need to start looking for other things. It can’t be that there’s nothing in this world that would interest you. If you haven’t found it yet, it is because you haven’t tried many things.

The internet is a vast ocean of knowledge today. So grab a cup of coffee and do your research. Narrow down on a couple of skills that you’d like to learn and start working on them.

    2. Align your interests to your Financial Goals:

Money can’t buy happiness is true to a certain extent. But money is important. No matter what your purpose is, you will eventually need money to reach there.

So my second advice would be to try and align your areas of interest to your financial goals. If you like to write, see if you can make a living with it; if you like to sing, see if you can acquire advanced skills so that you can become a music coach.

Maybe one skill might not be enough to sustain your lifestyle. But it doesn’t matter. You can always create multiple sources of Income by acquiring high-paying skills.

    3. Think:

Try to spend some time alone for a couple of days. Keep your phone and other distractions away, and try to listen to your inner voice. Ask yourself what makes you happy.

You won’t get the answer immediately. But self-reflection is powerful, and if you think logically, you will find your answer. Try to connect the dots and make a relation between what you love to do, how you’d earn, and how it can contribute towards a purpose in life.

Purpose is a bigger term than passion. True happiness comes from giving back to others. So, the purpose is related to what we can ultimately give back for the welfare of humanity on the whole. It needn’t be a big contribution.

For example, a classical musician can help people release stress through his music. See how you can contribute whatever little you can to the world through your actions.

I believe if we want to make a meaningful contribution to a purpose, it is very important that we discover our strengths and what we’re good at. We will be able to give our best to the world only if we love what we do.

Hence, devote time towards discovering what you’re meant to be doing in this world, and you will ultimately be directed towards your purpose in life!

How to Live a Meaningful Life?

Our social circle, achievements, and family give meaning to our lives. However, in this article, I would like to touch upon two deeper aspects that contribute towards leading a meaningful life – Life Chores and Discipline.

    1. Life Chores

Do you wonder why celebrities fall victim to depression even after leading successful and luxurious lives? It is because they lose meaning in life. Being served everything on a silver plate, they don’t have to move a finger to do anything.

As much as we place importance on our career, fitness, or financial success, it is equally important to look at daily chores as an important part of our lives. It feels good to make your bed, your cup of tea, and do the regular chores in the morning before you leave for work.

These might seem like small things, but they contribute greatly to our mental well-being. We feel empowered and responsible when we’re able to do our chores ourselves. Washing the dishes or cooking a nice meal for yourself is very therapeutic as it gives you a mental break that you need from work or complex tasks.

Life is not just about a career or making money. There’s a lot more to it. For example, A person might be very wealthy, but if he doesn’t know how to make his bed or wash his dishes, he might struggle with finding meaning in life.

Comfort and luxury are good, but too much of anything is not good. It’s the combination of daily chores, achievements, and responsibilities that make our lives meaningful.

    2. Discipline

Discipline is the ultimate form of self-love. Sometimes, we do feel lost in life and often feel confused about what to look forward to. In such times, discipline is a savior.

We might not always be sure of what we want to do in life, and that’s okay. What we can do is focus on what we are supposed to do at the present moment.

For example, suppose you’re a student, and you have a course to complete. But you also want to think of other creative career options. But you don’t know where to start from.

In such a situation, I would suggest that you make a routine wherein you devote 70% of your time to what you’re supposed to do (i.e., focus on your course) and the rest 30% can be devoted towards exploring other areas or learning a new skill instead of wasting your entire day worrying about life.

As you progress, you’ll feel way better than you’d feel if you just sat and ruminated about your confusions and fears. And who knows, in the process, you might even end up discovering something incredible about yourself!

So no matter how your life circumstances are, always stick to your schedule and achieve the targets that you set for yourself. This will give you immense satisfaction and change the way you look at yourself. You’ll start respecting yourself more and find meaning in the things that you do regularly.

    Final Thoughts:

Friends, life is not what happens to you; it is what you make of it. It is okay to look for meaning and purpose but at the same time, remember not to overthink. Follow discipline and do what you’re supposed to do. If you take charge of your time, you won’t have to worry much about anything else. Life is a book written by us, and we must make sure to autograph it with excellence!
